Pepo farms started in the industry by being the first commercial grower of pumpkin seeds, Pepo Farms have moved into the social enterprise realm dedicated to help local farmers that grow sustainably find new markets through their oil and flour mills. All products sourced by Pepo are grown without chemicals. Their farm “Pepo” started in Chinchilla in 2002 by John Garbajs, In 2004 they sold their first snack pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil at the Noosa Farmers’ Market, becoming the first Australian growers and commercial producers of Australian pumpkin seed products.
In 2010 the family moved the farm to Ovens in Victoria, and it is now managed by John’s daughter Sharen Rivett and her husband Jay. It was in Ovens where the upgraded their oil press and started to do more than just growing and process pumpkin seeds. The farm also helps other growers in the region, by buying their nuts and seeds for one of the three companies that fall under the “Pepo” banner: Pepoe Community Farm, Artisan Farm Mill and the Australian Pumpkin Seed Company.
