Meet our makers: John & Femy, Cooks Apple Factory

John & Femy, Cooks Apple Factory

Supplying to Food Connect since: 2020

What do you produce? Apple juice and apple juice mixes

When, how and why did you become a maker? Our family has been living and working on the Granite Belt in Queensland since the mid 1850's. We started making juice in the 90's and continue to this day. Cooks Apple Factory represents the second generation of apple juice producers.

What does a typical day look like for you? Up at 6am preparing to crush juice around 7am. Usually cleaned by 3 in the afternoon and time to relax with a cool drink at sunset

What do you love about what you do? We love that we can produce healthy food and work together as a family. At times all three generations are involved in making juice. Producing good quality food is a pleasure in itself. The work is interesting and we enjoy dealing with our suppliers and consumers. We all bring different skills to the process and all contribute in some way. It is a healthy environment both mentally and physically and we cherish each day we are allowed to continue.

Why do you choose to work with Food Connect? We like the Food Connect concept of linking farmers and consumers. Everyone needs to be aware of how their food is produced and Food Connect is integral to this.

What would you most like to see change in how consumers engage with their food?  We would like to see consumers having the chance to choose well ripened fresh produce instead of the, often, immature, tasteless and artificially ripened product available at large chain stores. We would like to see less reliance on perfect fruit and more emphasis on taste and nutrition.
